OBITUARY IN THE MOBILE PRESS - Sunday, June 27, 1999 Grace Esther Smith - Age 80. A native of London, England and a resident of Silverhill, AL, died Friday, June 25, 1999. Mrs. Smith is survived by one son, Simeon B. Smith, Jr., Atlanta, GA; one daughter, Susan Elizabeth Smith, Fairhope, AL; three sisters, Margaret Stephens, and Hazeltine Lyrene of Silverhill, AL, and Edith Neal of Mobile, AL; two brothers, Paul Edhegard and Conway Edhegard of Silverhill, AL; four grandchildren. Grace graduated at age 16 from Robertsdale High School, then attended Birmingham Baptist Hospital Nursing School and became a registered nurse. Within months she was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army and promptly requested overseas duty, serving in Egypt, Eritea and Iran during WWII as a part of the Mobile Medical Unit. It was during this time she met her husband to be, Simeon Smith of Madison, FL. They were married in Biloxi, Mississippi and remained happily married until his death in 1975. She never remarried. Grace was a career nurse earning her BS from Bridgeport University and her Masters in Nursing at the University of Florida. During five decades of service Grace was employed as a psychiatric nurse by Miami Mental Health, Mobile Mental Health and Baldwin County Mental Health in addition to her service in Africa and later West Germany. A wing of the Baldwin County Mental Health Department is named in her honor. Grace touched the lives of her large family and numerous friends in unforgettable ways. Perhaps Grace Smith's greatest contribution was the deep care she felt and gave to hundreds of mentally and physically ill patients who might otherwise have been without friends or hope. As the daughter of missionaries, she carried on her family's tradition of service to Jesus Christ. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, June 28, 1999, at 11:00 A.M. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Silverhill, AL. Friends may call from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Private grave side services will be held at the Silverhill Cemetery, Silverhill, AL. Funeral arrangements by MACK FUNERAL HOME, INC. Hwy 59, Robertsdale, AL.
